When I look back at the town I grew up in, and more importantly, the neighborhood and it's surrounding environment, I can see now how truly special a place and time it was.
Moving back to my hometown in the Spring of 2014 was an interesting experience as the first thing I felt was just how small everything felt to me after having lived through so much over the prior 15 years away. But oddly enough, concurrently, I also felt an expansiveness to it all. If that makes any sense. The stories you'll read about here may sound like fiction but most all of it is actually true. Obviously, the names have been changed to protect the not-so-innocent, and the situations may or may not have been slightly diluted over time, but most everything you'll read here really did happen to one degree or another. As they say, you can't make this stuff up and the truth is stranger than fiction. And it is. I was lucky enough to grow up in the last generation and days just before helicopter parents, political and social correctness and the horribleness that modern tech has driven straight through the heart of all of our lives. It was a time of true, hard, and experiential living that I don't think we'll ever see it again. We were the last generation. For better or worse. I think for the worse, but I'm pretty biased about such things as you probably already can see. Life was still a true village effort back then with an even truer sense of community and place. Over time, I hope you'll get to know and love the characters I was surrounded by here in my little neck of the woods in small-town WNY and even begin to feel like you were there yourself.~AA |
