A few of the characters you'll find in my comic strips
|
Sifl is a salamander & Herbert, a turtle.
Together, they are the primary characters of the Small Town WNY comic strip. They were captured by two brothers, Francis and Henry, while they were on a camping trip with their Grandparents in the Adirondacks and taken back to their home to a small town that sits perched on the shores of a beautiful lake in Western New York State. Now, instead of exploring and having adventures every day in their natural habitats, Sifl and Herbert spend a good deal of their time plotting their pretty regular escapes while occasionally watching the TV and computer screen that Francis keeps on for them 24/7 on his desk across the room to keep them company while he and Henry are in school. But the only thing the TV and computer screens really ever seem to serve is to twist & distort Sifl and Herbert's already cynically dark view of human existence as they ponder the meaning of it all and take the piss out of each other to pass the time and fixate on their own little window to the outside world. ~AA |
Although I spent 5 years in New England and a decade in Northern California, one thing that never left me "out there" was the nutty characters this region seems to breed.
Each town seems to have a cast of characters that are pretty much living or dead legends at this point that only become more legendary with every passing generation. While I have my own theories about it, I really think it has something to do with our rather isolated proximity to the rest of civilization. If you've ever traveled by car to the east coast or really anywhere outside of WNY, you'll come to realize that there's a sort-of bizarre, "Goldfish Bowl" isolationism we experience here in WNY that seems to breed a certain regional "quirkiness" all its own. "Tiny Tales" is my (heartfelt in my own ever-so twisted way) tribute to the cast of characters I remember from my past and have met over the years here. Of course, the names and towns have been changed to protect the not-so-very innocent but still, you may find a few characters you even know show up here. Lol... ~AA |
As I've already mentioned about a dozen times elsewhere on this site, I wanted to be a comic strip author/illustrator before I wanted to be just about anything. But not... a comic book artist or author.
There's a huge differentiation between the two and it bothers me to end when I mention my love for all things comic strips and some knucklehead shoots back a quip about comic books. They are vastly different media and mediums and the only thing they have in common is the fact that they are hand-drawn and inked. But everything else about them is practically polar. From the initial, creative mindset to the demographic that consumes them. Anyway, my love for all things comic strip oriented has never faded and only become stronger as I've gotten older. I think if I hadn't stumbled onto making kids and travel shows for television I would have pressed a little harder on the comic strips you see here and tried to get one or both of them published from one of the large syndicates. As it is, I never stopped creating comic strips and now am sitting on piles of them here and thought it may be time to open up the old hard drives, peruse through what I've created and release the best of it to everyone now. Eventually, I'll get the few hundred strips I have in my back catalog released here. Thank you for checking them out and I hope you enjoy them as much as I love creating them for you. ~AA |
